Bound within a system that denied their freedom and autonomy both as African Americans and as women, enslaved women at Monticello—and indeed, throughout the country—faced unique trauma and challenges. On March 11, 2021, we will share stories about individual women enslaved at Monticello, and discussed how these resilient women lived within, and fought against a system that denied their humanity.
