Justice would not be necessary if all men were friends.
Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Abraham Lincoln, First Inaugural Address

A CONVERSATION OF CULTURES

We are a living conversation of individuals, each one a sanctuary of solitude unto themselves, and we are an instrument of connection between persons, peoples, perspectives, traditions, and institutions. Our work in the world is measured by the solitudes we support and the connections we communicate. We are a Society of Solitudes.

We draw upon the rational spirit of the American Enlightenment, the transcendental spirit of the American Renaissance, and the environmental spirit of the American West, all resting upon a foundation of Native American wisdom, to form a unified culture of individual possibility, accessible to all people everywhere who ask the abiding questions of life and death and love and meaning. We believe in the infinitude of the individual person as a foundation for the healing of the nations. We seek the renewal of Society by offering hospitality to the Stranger.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
