From Philadelphia in 1776 to Paris in the 1780s, Thomas Jefferson spent time in the august company of his “great and dear friend” Benjamin Franklin. Born more than a generation apart and differing on some issues like slavery, they were nevertheless great companions and intellectual colleagues.
