Male and female represent the two sides of the great radical dualism.
But, in fact, they are perpetually passing into one another. —Margaret Fuller

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
John Muir, My First Summer in the Sierra

in a Transcendental Light

The Innermost House experiment is also a documentary work of art and a destination for renewal. Our work in the world as a public benefit foundation is measured by the connections we form and communicate: connections between dark and light, night and day, earth and heaven; between east and west, north and south; between rich and poor, learned and unlearned; between feminine and masculine, youth and age, matter and spirit; between knowledge and experience; between art and science; between life in the woods and life in the world. We seek to express and share an underlying unity of things through an experiment in "plain living, high thinking and fellow feeling" in the American landscape.

Our project is a creative, curated experiment, and we invite community and thought leaders, artists and naturalists to join with us in search of the sources of deep place and time. Our visitors to the woods are our ambassadors of renewal to the world, each bearing away with them their record of experience in thoughts, feelings, words or pictures.
